There are masteries you can choose to unlock and apply that will damage your own character when you use specials, and poison and bleed your character at the start of the fight. but they greatly increase PI and attack.

It is a huge benefit for arena to have them. Its debatable and situational if they're good for everyday questing and alliance events. They're nicknamed suicides because you're choosing to apply stuff to your character that will eventually kill themselves.
