could be a combination of things..arenas, alliance wars, etc..these days I have been getting 4* crystals almost once every week give or take

You can average about 5 per month. Those at higher tiers in AW (we are at tier 14) can get more and more active alliances can get more rewards from alliance events.

I do the monthly quests (both normal and heroic, don't try the others at all), the milestones in arena (making sure I always do enough to make rank rewards too for all of the arenas), alliance wars (like 9 out of 10 and we win about half of them ) and the various alliance events (so active alliances are a distinct advantage).

A key component though is your current roster. The more 3-stars you already have on your roster, the more likely you will get a dupe 3-star and thus shards for 4-star. So when I open crystals, I start out with PHCs, then open 3-star crystals in order to maximize my chances of duping 3-stars.

So from 4-star shards I get directly from AW and other sources plus the duping of 3-stars, I average about 5 4-star crystals a month.

So if you are in an active alliance, high tier in AW, grind a lot in arenas, do all of the monthly quests, etc. you will get more than 5 per month. But for us "lowly peasants", we get about 5/month.
