Awakening Gems

Hey,
I'm relatively new to the game and have been playing it like crazy, it's amazing... anyway.
I have collected a good number of 3 star champions but I haven't gotten duplicates yet and the solo crystals have only been giving me signature gems. Is there a way you can buy awakening gems or is the only way to awaken a character to spin a crystal or get duplicates?
