Getting hit by Special and mid Recovering

Today I was playing Expert Proving Grounds. Running the "hard" path. Got to the end with Loki as the final boss. Since I ran the "hard path" his S1 is unblockable. 1st time he fired it, I didn't evade fast enough (tried to swipe back but was apparently too slow) and took the staff to the chin. Amazingly though, I recovered after being hit by the 1st part and was able to block part 2.
I'm pretty sure I shouldn't be able to recover from a special mid animation and block the 2nd half after being hit by the 1st half.
