Mordo Shield (picture)

Has anyone seen or know why this happens? His asterial shield went to just a circle during the fight and it appeared that way on the ending scene. Does it mean anything or is it a bug?

Negatively, it's a long standing bug. Positively, it could be a homage to Cash's Ring of Fire.
