Me and Opponent using special move at the same time

I pressed my L1 on archangel and the falcon I was fighting instantly used his L1 also. My archangel started the animation but falcon did his kick thing and my archangel stopped, but then when falcon moved back to shoot his guns, my angel started the animation again and was doing it while getting shot. Only I took damage, we both lost our power bars.
