I've been playing the game for over three years. I've watched the progression of the champions and their mechanics. For me things really began to change with the addition of Spider-man Stark Enhanced, then Iceman and AA. From that point on there has been a bevy of really compelling, interesting, nuanced champions that take the game to another level.
Pre-SSE there were certainly others that fit in this category including Ghost Rider, Dr. Voodoo and Hyperion but it seems as if SSE was when things really began to accelerate. It is extremely enjoyable and satisfying to learn these characters and crush content with them using knowledge, strategy and skill, especially since they are not all cookie cutter.
This is probably one of the most important things that makes me play this game literally every day.
