Ferocious Wolverine – A small rework

Wolverine is hands-down a very good champion, no doubt about it. But from a gameplay point-of-view, he’s deeply broken.

Before you explode in a wolverine rage, let me explain. Wolverine’s regeneration is based on his Power levels. This creates a strong incentive not to use his Special Attacks. And indeed, his Special Attacks do jack. Ergo, the best strategy is to never use a Special Attack (or it should be to finish off). A well-balanced champion gives a decent counter-incentive to actually use Special Attacks. This way, two competing modes of gameplay emerge which allows for tactical decision making.

Entering Ferocity Charges. When Wolverine is bleeding or his opponent is bleeding, Wolverine gets a passive Ferocity Charge per stack of bleed. Each Ferocity Charge gives a flat +% increase in Special Attack Damage and Critical Hit Damage.

There are two options: they could be cumulative, meaning that the charges do not degrade and stack-up throughout the fight. This means that each charge gives a relative low increase (for instant +2.5%) in damage but over the long run can accumulate in a big boost (and as a defender, potentially lethal). Or it could be instantaneous, meaning you gain a charge which gives a hefty boost (for instant +10%) but it degrades after a period of time and it can only be regained after another stack of bleed. This means you need to use them fast and puts some time pressure on the user (or as a defender, requiring a moment to dodge back and wait for it to expire).

Why should he gain charges when he’s bleeding? Well, this is to be a counter against Skill champions, especially those ones who rely on regular bleed debuffs (Killmonger, Gwenpool , Blade and others). This will allow for more competitive gameplay. Also, this is also to gain charges when fighting certain champions who are bleed immune but cause bleed (Ultron, Morningstar).

Why should the charges be passives? This is to counter Mystic champions who can nullify or remove buffs in some way. Currently, Wolverine gets completely shutdown by Scarlet Witch, Mephisto or others. Passive Ferocity Charges will allow to at least not get totally steamrolled by those.

Why also Critical Hit Damage? Well, only Special Attack Damage would make sense class-wise, but it would make the charges way too rigid. They would only boost damage for Special Attacks only, and be entirely useless for the rest of the attacks. Also, if you do critically hit with a Special Attack, that will give even more damage.

I prefer for Ferocity Charges not to increase the Critical Damage Rating but rather add a straight percentage extra to the Critical Hit Damage modifier. This makes it different from the Cruelty buffs of the two other Wolverine champions.
