Permanent bans are not given out lightly. The odds are pretty good you did do something wrong and you know what it is, but you either a) don't think the devs could prove it, b) don't think they ban for that because you know a guy who knows a guy who wasn't banned for it, c) you shared your account with someone else and you don't think you should be banned for something someone else did, or d) think you can bluff your way past the ban.
In very, very few circumstances players have been banned in error, because no process is perfect. However, most of the time when the devs review bans, it turns out to be so obvious of a thing that they wish they could ban the same account twice, or send someone to your house and ban you in person.
