Are Nefaria’s Ionic Charges Individual Buff?

I’m asking this question in the context of placing defenders on nodes that benefit them. Nefaria gains a lot of Ionic Charges fast. Are these considered buffs and if so are they individual buffs?

Thanks. I’m still trying to wrap my head around these things.

I’m glad to know that because Nefaria isn’t really considered a defender so I wouldn’t place him unless there is a huge benefit from it.

Buffs always have a symbol that has a definable ring around them. Anything without that ring is a passive. But some things are neither and are just a character's abilities and aren't subject to anything that affects buffs or passives. Nefaria's ionic charges are a unique ability that is passive, but is neither a buff or passive for the sake of other abilities that could have an effect.

Okay. Thanks for that information. It’s really helpful to know.

What are some examples of buff heavy defenders? I just got access to edit our AW map but I only have so much to work with because a lot of what has been placed are the same standard defenders you usually see.

You can place Nefaria on those node that benefit you from placing debuffs on the opponent

I’ve found Hulkling not to be the best defender. His specials are easy to bait and get out of the way with so as long as you can avoid letting his power bar dip too low it’s easy to establish a pattern with him. When I’ve broken that pattern he destroyed me though.

Someone placed Onslaught on one of the buff centric nodes. From what I’ve seen using him he has virtually no buffs. So I need to swap him.

Actually, if you can't counter his buffs, he'll get Regen and indestructible, and his power gain increases with the amount of buffs he gets

Your last sentence is the reason why Hulkling is an annoying defender. Yes, his specials are easy to deal with, but consider a couple things.
On a node that benefits buffs, he gains a significant advantage. If he's being passive or throws mainly SP1, that's more uptime on his indestructible buff, prolonging the fight and eating special damage if you time it wrong. It also means more regens, again prolonging the fight.
His specials are somewhat lengthy, so on a rich get richer node he will gain most of a bar of power back before a special is done, so more specials are being thrown and as a result pushing you back.
And of course the last piece, his damage. Make one mistake and it hurts like heck.
He's not a bad defender, but he gives you more opportunity to make mistakes and punishes you severely if you do. Putting him on nodes where he benefits from all his buffs only adds to that.

You can also use the pause menu to show if something is a buff or not.
