I'd suggest a combination of Knowledge and Deck tbh. You don't always have to play well to win, you just have to do better than the opponent in front of you. I've won many a round by forcing them into a tough matchup in rounds 2/3 where they have less options to counter certain defenders.
Combination of deck and skill is utmost, knowledge comes with playing against better players with better decks and with experience. Alot of players are inexperienced but have alot better decks (using shathra vs havok lol) and finally luck is also very important coz what is skill and deck combined with knowledge doing at all if all your ai does is turtle for next 2 decades in a power gain meta or just special intercepts u just when you are dashing etc etc
All 4 combined is neccessary in competitive bgs, but Deck > Skill > Luck > Knowledge according to my experience in past few gc pushes.
Knowledge goes a long way but the others all have an impact ofc. You can get consistent wins even against whale decks depending on how well you know/play some stuff
Some months ago I would have said Knowledge but now it feels like units and luck.
I would say is skill but also roster. There was a guy I went against with had a massive roster and lots of r4s i put my maestro and he used his sig 200 tigra 7 star rank 4. Now if you know Tigra does not work well against maestro cause he shuts down basic attacks (this includes heavys) so he lost that round and the match. Know if your fighting someone like MSD who has a great roster and skill. Thats where you either have to hope they loose out a mistake, not pull the right champs or just lag (jk about the lag no one deserves to get lagged). But Battlegrounds is great if we all had the same ranked up champs. Until everyone can have the same champs with the same ranks we won't see skill be a thing for bgs for a good while. It's mainly gonna be how many defenders can I choose to make this person annoyed 😂
Still fun to play though. Not fun to loose though...

Tigra can nuke Maestro in like 30 seconds, I think they played it wrong or the AI didn’t cooperate

This was me in VT now I'm in GC I changed my mind 🥲🥲 s**t so hard, no matter how many counters I bring I never seem to cover all area.
I've said this in many posts and on other sites - BGs is for the 1% of MCoC and is only slightly about skill and knowledge. If you're in a Top Tier AW Alliance, you're going to be doing better in BGs. If you're a whale, you're going to be doing better. If you're in an AW alliance with a few whales, you're going to be doing better. If you've been playing the game since it started, you're going to be doing better.
Unlike sports, there's no chance in BGs for the new, super-skilled player to make a huge jump because they will always be kept down by lack of roster. And if that new player can't find a high-tier AW alliance, which they won't because they don't have the roster, then they will always be behind the people that started the game first. And Kabam is happy to keep feeding those people all the rewards they possibly can. Kabam has no incentive to help new people join the top tiers of the game.
Until BGs has set 30-champ rosters each season, which would rotate with each season, and would include different types of rosters like a whole BG season with only 2-star champs, it will never be fair and it will never be "the most competitive mode in the game."
And Kabam is happy to keep feeding those people all the rewards they possibly can. Kabam has no incentive to help new people join the top tiers of the game.
Preface by saying I am a casual player.
I don’t think that correctly reflects the intention of game developer. The game is still attracting new players and rewarding them with much faster progression status and much easier access to high tier champs.
Even in BG, with the new currency, players with huge roster were given incentive to climb faster instead of camping in VT.
Naturally, it still takes time to catch up and catch up to which level?
To say game developer has no incentive to see new players progress and these players seeing they did progress is missing the mark.
Heart of fire event is the best example of this, Dark Phoenix everywhere and some people have up to 8 7* rank 4 it's crazy
Those two things don’t matter much though. Phoenix can just be banned or countered like any other champ, and R4s are only marginally stronger than R3s. If you have R3s you can still beat a deck of R4s
Id say luck is the most important at the top. Celestial players are all very skillful with a pretty good deck just have to win the draft.
Skill/knowledge every where else. Even when out drafted if you know what you’re doing you can still win. At least that my experience a lot of whales are in lower brackets for a reason.
It’s a combination of deck and skill but skill overall. Beroman has a decently strong deck but there are much stronger decks out there. He consistently places at or near the top because of skill

Tell that to a rank 4 weapon X or serpent, you'll time out to them especially with R2s and almost no champion can counter dark Phoenix, she will convert any form of buff manipulation to passive and only 2 champions are immune to nova flames, safeguard will cap your damage so nuking is impossible. But this also brings me to another aspect constant need to have a counter I can bet there would be a new mystic champ that will reduce buff potency to zero and ignore all forms of damage cap specifically for Dark Phoenix and that champion will end up being a one trick pony.
Need at least skill + Deck Without knowledge, sure you're gonna lose some rare matches but without skills you're not going far and without deck strength of 7r3 7r4 you're not going to top ranks either.
Option 6 : High end device which only limits loading time to 2-3 seconds.
With a little spending and completing everest content really puts you close with those whales cause at the end of the day you can only use 30 champs in your deck but the problem is facing against a r4 with a r3 and a loading time of 10 - 12 seconds is just devils work. Literally every other competitive part of the game does not include loading time into fights except BG. Like they expect us to spend on our device instead of ingame. That is bad marketing.

Its never my fault.
