How does one determine their FIRST R4?

I finally have enough T7Bs for my first ever Rank 4, but it feels slightly unfulfilling because where do I invest? If I do it for any Battlegrounds threat, especially defender or dual threat, they'll obviously get banned. Do I spend it on primarily an attacker? Someone who will most help through things like Ordeal and Crucible and rest of Act 9? Prestige for the upcoming variable event quests format?

Any opinions are always greatly appreciated, not sure exactly where to go. Also of note, some of my R2's include Hyperion, Bishop, Guardian, Hulk, Titania, Phoenix, Domino, Enchantress, Arcade, Angela, and Spider-Man Stark. I also have a Cosmic awakening gem and a Generic awakening gem.

The one you are fine with getting banned in BGs. And rock it everywhere else.

Oh also...It's important, to make the content easier you have plans of doing. The content will get you more r4s.

Someone with damage and at least one immunity.

Whoever you seem to use most in all parts of the game. Not worth investing in one game mode at your roster stage.

Dual threats are the best imo, followed by champs you like. America Chavez is one of my favourites in the game plus she's a really strong attacker + defender so she was my first.

Serpent is the most useful champ in the screenshots — meaning he’s highly effective in a shitload of different modes and fights.

You have plenty of bangers but if you’re following the logic of “who will enable me to clear the maximum amount of content” then he’s probably the answer.

Count was my first R4 and I did it because he is amazing at story quests. Made 9.2 a breeze. He also sold path 2 in war. And is just generally great. Certain metas are good for him in BG also. And he's fun to play, evading the last hit of the special is very satisfying.

Not really a bad one in the bunch. I believe since it's your 1st R4, it should be whomever you like using the most. Worry or don't about Meta rabkups later...

I chose the champ I like to play the most. For me that was Ironheart. Before they fixed her damage bug. She’s still my most used champ. Venom was no 2 for the exact same reason.

Get a CD disc, write Onslaught on 1 side and Serpent on the opposite side. Chuck it as far as you can , then just see who it lands on.

    Easy.

    Do you have Spiderpunk?
If the answer is yes then he's the correct option. If not then any meta relevant character you like to play is the correct answer

I only agree with the first option. as the owner of a R4 spunk , he slaps hard.
I disagree with the second option. Don't rank meta cause you NEED to rank meta. Rather rank who you enjoy playing and more will come later.

Mine was warlock or spiral I think. Just because I love playing them so much

Onslaught = dual threat + prestige = covers all 3 criteria

First r4 was a skill class gem, so it was between shang chi or Korg.

But in general champs that I like most follow by champs that hits hard.

I'd go with onslaught or serpent

This is what I did. Spam was my first rank 4 cause I love playing him. Yeah he gets banned in battlegrounds sometimes, but at least I get to enjoy playing him elsewhere and he slaps when I do get to play him in bgs.

The path I follow is- Am I in a prestige chasing alliance that has to choose my rankups to stay relevant? If the answer is yes, then you're asking in the area. If the answer is no, then rank up your favorite or who will make your gameplay life better.

I’ve tried ranking up based on overall strength…utility…roster balance (class and offense/defense)…end content need…

But honestly, at the end of the day, I think I’ve regretted to some degree every rank up that wasn’t because I loved playing that character the most.

If it’s your first i would go for the champ you enjoy playing most tbh.
Lots of great options,…out of my R4’s i enjoy Serpent best, not because of defensive abilities alone,..(that’s a bonus),..but because he’s a fun champ to play on the attack,.and loads of utility to boot.

Someone you enjoy using. Chances are that whoever you r4 first will be a champ that you end up using a lot, so make sure that you enjoy that usage. Who it is, specifically, matters less. My first r4 was Howard the Duck. No regrets. He's a lot of fun and have been very useful in different parts of the game ever since I ranked him up. The good thing about those initial rank-ups is that you're mostly punching down for a while until the new rank becomes your status quo. That means that even "lesser" champs can really shine, similarly to when 7*s were first introduced and people marveled at some of the mid-tier champion in the launch pool who were suddenly given a pretty significant boost due to the increased stats of the 7*s compared to the 6*s. Going from r3 to r4 is similar, in a way. It sort of gives you a window to be a bit more creative.

But you do you. I'm up to five r4s now and I'd be lying if I said that all of them were just fun and quirky rank-ups. Most of them after Howard have been very meta relevant. Obviously ranking up the best of the best comes with certain undeniable advantages.

If you want any specific tips, I'll say this: Out of your r3s, the ones I personally have at r4 are Count Nefaria and Mister Sinister. Both are great.
