Gifting event - no gift tickets to send?

Was there no free gifting possibility last year?
I was wondering why only units gift this season - it is meant to be gift for holiday, right?
Moreover, even if your alliance is very active, if you wanna reach the point limit, you need to spend around 4k unit, if I counted well.
This is a bit moneygrabbing for me.
Last time you could make good progress wo units.

    You can get the final milestone by gifting 30 t4 alliance health potions. This is 3k units, and with the units in milestones, you can do it with 2430 units.

    Shouldn’t the calendar have started today? I’m pretty sure it’s started the same day as the event in the past
