Can't trigger specials during AI attack?

Ok, maybe I just didn't notice this before or I'm completely wrong, but thought you could interrupt the AI's attack with a special? Even when repeatedly hitting the special button, I had to eat the full 5 hit combo first before it triggered. Was that always the case?

    Once the combo starts you are in it until the end or if you have unstoppable active.

    It is technically possible, but it's very hard to pull off. It's harder against the AI, as they tend to be pretty uniform in their actions, but if there is a delay between 2 attacks, it is theoretically possible to launch a special attack in that little amount of time.

    Only the AI really has the ability to launch specials while blocking. It's a special advantage they currently have.
