How to acquire Thing ( any star ) ?

I have 429 champs, but I dont have a single Thing, so I cannot complete the Time after Time event quest ( gated Thing ). How do I get a Thing of any star, apart from spending money of crystals and getting top10% in arena ?

    I believe the "UNIFIED" crystals is the method implemented to acquire characters for the gated events.
