PSA: If you are holding 6* shards or crystals until November
I'm sure a lot of us are holding 6* crystals and 6* shards until November, because that's when 6* dups start dropping 7* shards.
HOWEVER
I'm also sure a ton of people are going to do this right at 12:01am on November 1st and then be sad. So remember:
1. 7* shards will not drop until the November UPDATE of the game comes out, PROBABLY on November 7th.
2. You actually have to APPLY THE UPDATE to get the shards. It is not enough that the game is updated, you also have to be updated.
3. You should probably WAIT until someone else confirms 7* shards are dropping. Failure is always an option.
4. If you jump the gun, Kabam has already stated they will NOT retroactively give you 7* shards.
5. 6* Max sig duplicates will be dropping a new max sig crystal that contains 7* shards after the November update. That means old max sig crystals will *NOT* be updating their contents to include them after the November update.

All of this, INCLUDING THE MAX SIG CRYSTAL, has been confirmed (there should be an official statement clarifying the max sig crystal update soonish).

When we release the November build, we will be introducing a new version of the Max Signature Ability Crystal that will provide 7-star shards; the name will remain the same.
Similar to needing to update to the November build to acquire 7-star shards, you will need to update to access the new crystal.
Any current 6-Star Max Sig Crystal existing in a Summoner's stashes will not be updated or adjusted.
TLDR;
Same name, new art, new description, new rewards, no changes to currently owned crystals.
But you should probably add that while the Update will “probably” come out Nov 7th, that does not mean you can say “well, it's 12:01am on Nov 7th, IN MY LOCAL TIMEZONE, so where's the update”.
Every month, especially for the regularly scheduled time drops of stuff, someone will say “it's 12:01am here, why isn’t new Quest/Event/etc available”.
And, as you stated, Updates are even more fuzzy.
Kabam has to publish them to Google/Apple.
Google/Apple has to accept them and make them available in their Stores.
Devices may take their own sweet time in detecting that there is actually an update available (if set for Auto-Update). Or else you can manually check in Store to see when it's available for you to get it a little faster than your Auto-Update.
According to the progression announcement, 7* champions will not be available to players until some time next year. This includes the 7* Immortal Iron Fist. So max sig crystals that drop before then will not contain any chance for 7* IIF.
7* IIF will be added to the max sig crystals at some point after 7* champions become explicitly available for players to obtain. The specifics have Not Yet Been Determined. But definitely NOT when the updated max sig crystals appear after the November update.
So to summarize, there will be (at least) three 6* max sig crystals in the game:
(1) Any 6* max sig crystal that drops before the November update (which includes max sig crystals that drop before the player updates their client) will contain what they contain now, and those contents will not be updated. They will drop that no matter when they are ultimately opened. This includes any max sig crystals people are sitting on now.
(2) 6* max sig crystals that drop AFTER the November update is applied to the game client but BEFORE 7* champions become available to acquire at some point next year will contain the possibility of 7* shards, in a manner similar to how 5* max sig crystals can (and usually do) contain 6* shards, but could contain other things. But one of those things will NOT be 7* IIF.
(3) At some point AFTER 7* champions become obtainable (through things like 7* crystals), which is currently announced to happen some time in Spring 2023, 7* IIF is most likely going to be added to the max sig crystal. This MIGHT NOT happen on the same day as 7* champs officially launch for players, however.
Basically, if you were trying to be the first person on the block to have a 7* champion, the max sig crystals will not loophole your way to getting one before everyone else.
Also, just to ensure there is no confusion (or rather as little as possible) this is not a deduction from the public announcements, this comes directly from the developers. The language above is mine, but it encapsulates two main facts from the developers: one: the November max sig crystal will not contain 7* IIF, and two: 7* IIF won't be added until some unspecified time after 7* champs are generally released to players. The rest is me trying to make things simple and explicit.
