Your unit argument holds for every spending event in the game no? I guess you think there is no money being made in CW or Banquet either? Draining units for basic things like energy is the first step towards getting people to buy units for other things. They don't need to directly monetise energy for this move to be a revenue booster. Just because you can't look past the first thing, doesn't mean it doesn't make sense or isn't true.

Should it be have higher attack values than story content though? No.

They effectively have ruined and devalued story content outside of a rewards hand out. No idea what wine glasses they are farting in but they gotta stop
