As someone who competed at the highest levels years ago and is just a casual now, I think you seem to misunderstand people's motivations in spending and grinding.

The players at the top would still be spending and grinding even if there were no rewards.

This was exactly the situation with Battlegrounds for a long time before the advent of radiance, and the top Celestial players today were still mostly playing and spending at similar levels back then, despite the lack of rewards.

The top players will complain about lack of rewards, but rewards are not why they spend and grind. They do it for personal needs/reasons separate from the game economy.
