Whenever a new star rating level, there is a tipping point where you just stop investing in the lower star rating. This is the progression of the game. Ascension was there to ease the transition to 7 stars, not stop them. So the answer isn't to counter this progression with more 6* ascension, but to embrace the change. Let go of the 6 stars like many have this past year. It's 7 stars for the future.

Pierce being bugged is a logical possibility though since both Valk and Hulkling have it and seem to be underperforming

Definitely seems bugged. My ascended 6 star without valk relic is doing more direct damage than my rank 4 7 star with the 6 star relic. I really hope this gets some attention and the fix won’t take ages to be implemented. I am one of those who blindly ranked her up, because I just enjoyed her so much back in the day.
