What is so good about Magik ?

KerneasKerneas Member Posts: 3,918 ★★★★★
Recently got her as 5* and took her on R3 (best champ I had and 2 catalysts in overflow) and she is very high ranked in spreadsheets, but I don't know what makes her so extremeky good. I mean yeah, she is sure good, but she doesn't seem as godly as other champions as Domino or Corvus, although she is in same "spreadsheet rank" as these.

If you value high damage output (e.g., Corvus and Domino) over utility, then yes, you won't find her all that great. If you like to control fights, then she is a monster.

She took me to uncollected along with Spidey, in a safety manner... they both kept me safe in that valley of shadows, I feared nothing

I don't have Domino or corvus or Stark
    All I have is magik
She's gotten me through almost everything
Using her in a fight is almost always a guaranteed win.
    She's just that great tbh
She's a simple champ that still helps you get far no matter what

I like her powerlock, but it requires crazily agressive playstyle, right ? Or am I just too passive ?

Nothing really, she's like poor man's dr voodoo. Limbo can be annoying on defense though

I know about defensive Limbo (I fought miniboss in AW once and it took me 800 per tick)

It does require you to pin your opponent against their wall and not letting up. For the most part at least. That's how I use her. It's fun.

She's still the best power control champion. And can be a very forgiving choice if you mess up and you trigger limbo. Has saved me many times.

I personally ranked Magik over Voodoo as a 5*, because she's the better power control champ. Her powerlock is stronger than Voodoos burns and drains, at least in my experience. Voodoo has a lot of other things going for him, but I would call him more of a jack of all trades than a master of power control. They're both amazing, but for different reasons

Her against the wall intercept style is what makes her so good. You get in that position, and the vast majority of fights are just over. Her damage output isn't crazy, but she gets through a lot of difficult fights with relative safety if you can play her right.

You need to look at the totality of how she works, not just the surface overview of her abilities.

    1. Power control. Magik has both power lock and power steal on SP2, and the power lock is long enough (9 seconds) for you to cycle all the way back around to SP2 before the opponent has a chance to break free of the lock and gain any substantial power most of the time. And because SP2 also has power steal, that helps you get back to SP2 quickly and removes any power they might have gotten before you landed the lock. Anything that can basically permanently eliminate the use of specials throughout the fight is extremely useful not just defensively but also offensively. If you don't have to worry about the target reaching SP3, you are more free to attack aggressively and quickly.

    2. Limbo. Most people consider Limbo to be mostly a defensive (as in, placed as a defender) ability, but it has offensive uses as well. For example, because Limbo triggers on every special attack it can erase the damage from effects like power sting. Get hit by Yellowjacket or Emma, just use a special and all the sting damage gets instantly unwound (as long as it doesn't instantly kill you). If you play her well, she can also use Limbo as a heal against effects like starburst if you play aggressively, or other damage effects if you time them correctly. Also, I don't run full suicides myself but I'm pretty sure Limbo also heals back recoil damage.

    3. Nullify. Magik has two ways to nullify the opponent. SP1 nullifies a buff and deals extra damage if a buff is nullifed. But the big banana is SP3. SP3 nullifies all buffs, and increases your attack rating for the purposes of the SP3 attack by a huge amount for each buff nullified. At one time Magik was queen of killing Groot: wait for him to stack all his buffs and then hit him with an SP3, which would basically instantly vaporize him. Even now, anything that stacks a lot of buffs is vulnerable to Magik obliterating them with SP3; she was an answer to the buff-stacking Uncollected Adaptoid a while back for example. And like all mystic champions that can nullify buffs, Magik benefits from mystic dispersion. Anything that stacks a lot of buffs can not only be nullified with SP3, the SP3 will hit like a truck and you'll get fed back a ton of power to do it again.

There's other good things to Magik (like the Limbo damage itself) but those are the big three in my opinion. Not just that she can do those things, but precisely how and at what magnitude.

And her base attributes are pretty fine as well.

The only downside of Magik is that it forces you to be quick and aggressive and in certain match-ups you need to be able to back-off. Then her power locks expires before you could re-apply itself and all goes out-of-sync. That and she lacks any other utility.
