How is damage actually calculated?

I just took my 4* Cap IW to max. He has a base attack of around 1200, he gets +574 when charged, another +574 for each charge when he does a heavy attack, and another +574 for each charge on a special 2. With three charges, that's around 5,000 damage. His crit damage rating is 180%, which should put him at around 9,000 on a crit.

But he seems to often crit for 18,000 on his special 2. I am not complaining! But I am also super confused at where that number is coming from. I've noticed other champs routinely crit for far more than their simple attack * crit rating would suggest possible. What am I missing?

It is hard to say without pictures or video and precise numbers, but one thing I can suggest is that critical damage is bonus damage over and above base damage. In other words, 180% crit damage means the attack will land for 2.8 times the original damage on a crit: 100% for the original base damage, and 180% of critical bonus damage. Sometimes people don't calculate it that way and calculate as if a crit would land for 180% of base damage. But that has an obvious problem: a critical damage rating of zero would be 50% critical damage bonus, and if that represented the total damage on a crit then crits would deal less damage than non-crits, which is not how it works.

In your example if a SP2 lands for 5000 on a non-crit, it should land for 14465 on a crit with a crit damage bonus of 180%. I'm not certain if this is being factored into your calculations or not.

I think your mastery, and synergy would add up to the total damage.
Like one of the mastery gives you additional 20% attack when you are below 50% health.
And with assassin, when you start a fight with more health than your opponent, you have more attack as well. Those numbers add up if i'm not mistaken.
