The thing is, all of you saying "make your own opinion of every champion" are neglecting a very important consideration.
Most casual players have not studied the game or the champions or the content to the extent that serious highly skilled endgame players have. They (I really should say we because I include myself in this category) simply do not have a good sense of how abilities interact with nodes or synergies or even how powerful they can be on their own. If we were left on our own we would be hopeless. We simply do not have the tools to effectively evaluate champions. And many casual players do not even have skilled alliance mates to discuss with.
Now this is not to say that I have never taken a champ that is rated highly and determined for myself that they do not work for me, or conversely, that there is a champ not as highly rated that due to ease of use, or how their playstyle fits with my natural tendencies, that I can be better off using them over some "better" champs. But I do need to be pointed in the right direction.
A player like me just does not have the time, resources , or, to be completely honest, interest, to put that kind of study in. So yes, I rely on these outside opinions as a jumping off point or to correct misconceptions I might have about certain champs or their abilities.
As I said in a previous post, if you are 100% dependent on tier lists and just follow them blindly, that's not good, but to simply dismiss them as a valid source of info and claim they are absolutely useless just because you have chosen to put in more study than most players and don't need them is ridiculous.
