Rank 4 Confusion

When we all were first beginning to r3 our 6 star champions, almost all of us very carefully considered who to rank, gave it tons of thought and on most occasions we all ranked the Dooms of the world, Corvus, Nick Fury and Torch etc as our very first r3. Now, I keep seeing the complete opposite with r4’s. It seems as though the same careful consideration is not being practiced. It’s almost as if some rank ups I’ve seen the summoner stuck his or her hand in a hat and pulled out a name! It’s not as if r4 materials are super common that can be gotten very easily either. Can someone help me understand this trend? Can someone help me understand why I’ve seen r4 Yellowjacket, r4 Rogue, r4 Air Walker and please help me understand r4 Groot!!!!

i think most of the r4s you're seeing are from the 3->4 gem from act 7 exploration. i think people are more willing to r4 the champ that they want because it's a specific class rather than a generic. like if you get a generic, you're more targeted to take up a high prestige or high damage champ like herc or doom. but say you pull a skill gem and you don't have any great skill options. you might be more inclined to take up a champ you enjoy like kilmonger. also, i think more people have started to rank up champs THEY enjoy using, not what most people enjoy

Lol what's wrong with Rogue, Airwalker, and Yellowjacket? They're very capable champs that can provide a lot of value without flashy numbers. Just because you only use the same 10 "beyond god tier" champs doesn't mean everyone else needs to.

Now, Groot on the other hand definitely isn't a smart rank up. People just do that to look cool and get their moment in the spotlight. Literally any rankup is more useful than Groot.

Because for content we have now, r2/r3s are more than enough. And very good numbers of players are doing r4 of their choice disregarding the META. Ranking one's fav champ gives them sense of satisfaction, joy and chance to shine in spotlight in unique rank ups too.

I think we are at the point in the game where R4 does not matter as much. You can beat anything in the game currently with a 5/65 five star. R3 are so common anymore and they are over powering the game, so an r4 is really over kill, so why not rank up who you like if you are not at the tippy top of the game in AW or AQ where prestige and death counts matter. I would not do it but I do enjoy seeing it. It has also opened my eyes that there are some champs that are older that still can be played, especially in the hands of a skilled person with those champs.

It’s a game, rank up who you enjoy and want to use, that’s what will ultimately give you the most enjoyment.

Also Yellowjacket is incredible and Rogue is very solid

You're seeing these because no one else is doing them. No one's going to come here bragging about taking Doom to R4 since everyone on the leaderboard has one.l and most of those people don't use the forums anyway. Who cares if you took Doom to R4 or Human Torch. I had the first ever Silver Centurion R4 and I don't regret it at all.

Most anyone with a unique R4 isn't chasing prestige so they can rank more freely.

I think it's high time people did more of what they want to vs having to compete for prestige.

Hear me out on this, I know it’s hard to accept. Sometimes people rank up the champions they like to play. There doesn’t need to be a big 5-D chess kind of reason. It’s a game.

I mean who cares? You rank who want we want who we want. I’m thinking to taking king groot to rank 4. Might just even take captain marvel to rank 4 since it’s a comic gem. I didn’t get the gem I wanted but I’m not mad.

I don’t believe KT made a bunch of videos about first R3s, or if he did then you and I don’t remember it.

Those less common R3s were ranked as well, someone did less common champs as their first R3s you just didn’t see them. Now a lot of unique R4s are thrown at you all over and it makes it seem like everyone is doing it when it’s actually just more like the same number as R3s.

Also because we don't really need rank 4s to clear any content. Most of the time our 6 star rank 3s are more than good enough for what we need. So if prestige is not a concern than a rank 4 is basically just a fun rank up luxary at this stage.

I think Rank 3's have proven to work across all sorts of content so people are less inclined to rank up the top options when they function perfectly at r3. I also think that with the state of the game some people just want to have some fun with a champ they genuinely enjoy rather than taking the less enjoyable but powerful options up

I love seeing people rank up the champ whom they love and I did the same!

Also , replying to your question. I can just say that we have come this far in the game where even 6* r3s can do all of our work. Also we know that eventually 6* r4 champs will get common one day like 6* r3 champs OR atleast the rewards will be pumped up in the future so we can get more r4s.

I personally see minute difference in most 6* r3 and 6* r4 champs. Just a little stat change most of time which doesn't even matter to me. I don't mind ending fight 10 hits late with the same 6* r3 champ so probably that's the reason I r4ed the champ I loved over the other choices haha.

I mean, I did say "more useful" and Iron Patriot with synergy is definitely more useful than Groot, so thanks for furthering my point.

I mean these less known R4s had to be surprising R3s 1st so they must of loved them from the start

My theory is we're seeing the consequences of rank deceleration - the increased attack and health we get for each rank up is noticeably and deliberately smaller from R2 to R3 to R4 than it has traditionally been. As a result, the pressure to rank the champ you think will get the most numerical benefit from that rank up is dropping. While it is still significant, it is now low enough that players are more likely to exercise some of their own preferences on those rank ups. So yeah, I think the game is giving people more opportunity to rank up "for fun" because the opportunity cost of being fun or daring with your rank ups is much lower. People can express themselves more in their rank ups. So they are ranking up for diversity of deck for battlegrounds, they are ranking up their favorite pet champ, they are ranking up just to be different, or to make a statement about a champ they think is underappreciated, just because they can.

Which I think is an all around good thing.

Seriously, it's a game. People rank whoever they want and who they enjoy. The difference in strength becomes smaller the higher the ranks I believe too and quite frankly we don't need R4s now for any content so it matter less. People have loads of R3s now. If someone has a champ at R3 already and they pulled a class gem for them and they enjoy using them then why not go for the R4...

Bc there was a title associated with R3s which is why everyone was a crybaby about not being able to rank who they wanted. Now there's no real downside to ranking up anyone if you don't care about prestige since we don't even need R3s for hardly anything.

Maybe people are realizing it just doesn't actually matter that much and trying to min max every decision you make in a game is dumb unless you're pushing at the very top.

I don't necessarily agree here. I think minimizing the importance of rank ups means that pretty much the only people that actually care about them is the most competitive. If you're throwing all your eggs in that one basket for monetization of rank resources, that seems flawed to me.

I took Nebula to r4 because she was my first 6* and deserved to be my first r4. Now I still have yet to choose who to use my science r4 gem on.

We don't need rank 4 in this game, and it will be like that for a while, so you don't need to be wise with your rank 4 especially if they are not your first.

Personally I love seeing all those unconventional rank ups. I check KT1s channel daily to see which champs gameplay he has uploaded this time. As for the argument of the class gem I have to completely agree. For example I pulled cosmic gem, which of course I used on Hercules, but to be honest I’d much rather have pulled another class, because he was going up anyways. By pulling science for example I’d have ranked up Overseer, whom I really enjoy using, but I won’t rank him with catalysts anytime soon.
