First of all the coming changes to bg's is awesome and I can't wait to start the season. With that being said, the chat posted showing wins needed in the VT with the current medal requirements still required you to win 3 matches on gold tier and 3 in Plat tier.

Make it make sense!!!!

The math makes perfect sense. The intent was never to make progress faster, it was to make it less punishing when losing a match

It was actually meant to do both. Progress should be faster, and losses less punishing, in Victory tier tracks below Diamond.

While the absolute best case scenario is still three wins in Gold, for most players the number of matches will be higher, because most people lose occasionally (or sometimes often). In the current system losses set you back more on a relative basis, which means the number of matches it will take to promote will be higher. I analyze the difference between the average number of matches it takes to promote for the current system and the announced season eight system in this thread, but here's a chart from that post:

For a given average win rate (per match) the Season eight system will allow players to promote on average much faster. For example, if you were averaging about a 50% win rate in Season 7 it would have taken you about 12 matches on average to promote one track in Gold. In Season 8, that number falls to 8 matches.
