"Generally you can remove protection if you can knock down your opponent." Its especially hard to deal with if your opponent has rock hard skin like Korg or Thing.
why is there seemingly protection everywhere these days
Perhaps if they make the nodes too champ specific then players will complain, which has happened in the past, so instead they just slap protection to make the fight last longer so there’s more time to make mistakes.
I've really been disliking the Power Shield 2.0 node they are slapping on everything now. Before, you could use DoT effects as a separate method to speed up longer fights. Now, fights take significantly longer since the increased damage based on specials doesn't always seem to trigger correctly [whether it be because the programming considers it a basic combo or Masteries come into play].

I have had so many SP3's do 0 damage with this nose which is absurd because it specifies more damage for higher SP and doesn't mention any restriction of just level 1 and 2.

There’s no restriction on special 3, the problem is when you throw the special 3 immediately on the end of a combo or other basic hit. When they’re too close together the special 3 ends up being read as a basic hit. It’s a dumb bug. Even dumber given that regular old power shield doesn’t have this problem. Just leave a small gap between throwing a basic hit and throwing the SP3 and you’ll be fine. This bug continues to go unacknowledged as far as I am aware, so it’s up to the players to solve the workaround.

I'd name the node but the official forums are light on for actual game info, you need a rando if you want to know stuff.
