Why are new 2*s not being added to the basic pool?

Not sure if anyone started a similar discussion, but I've been wondering about this for a while - is there any particular reason why new 2*s aren't being added to the premium crystal pool when the 3* and higher rarities of new champs get added to the basic pools?

2* versions of every new champ are clearly available when clicking on "unowned" in your roster after each update, so I'm just wondering why they're being so gatekept.

I know there are the collector's crystals that are available like once a year, and then these new monthly collector crystals tied in with the SQ. There used to be some special deals through Marvel Insider that had at least one rare 2*, but they don't even seem to do that anymore.

Maybe the reason why they're gatekept is so that collectors spend all of their units on the monthly collector crystals? But nobody in their right mind would do that... I mean, I learned my lesson when they were first introduced back in late 2022 and I spent about 2k units trying to get 2* Sersi - and I never got her :mask:

I was also wondering if the reason could be the content, but that seems like a stretch because the vast majority of players don't use 2*s at all, not even new accounts. Plus, there is no quest - nor a solo event - that relies on having a big 2* roster except for that one Variant (and it's not like its rewards are that massive anyway). Then there are the arenas that we get once or twice per year, but I can't think of anything else, which brings me back to my question.

I realize that 2*s are pretty much totally useless in the current meta, but adding them to the regular premiums would make opening premiums fun (to me and probably the other 4 people who collect 2*s lol).

So that the collectors have to spend units to buy them

They stopped adding the 2*s to the pool back in 2015 before I started playing, back when (I think) people were getting more and more 3 and 4 stars and 2* were becoming less relevant. I think it was also after 5*s had come in, so again, far less relevant.

well... now that marvel insider is dead, the only logical solution is to add every available 2* in the basic pool 🤷‍♂️

If Ascencion requires champs of lower * ratings, then it would make sense to control it.

In reality, I suspect it's more about the new player experience and not wanting to overwhelm new players. That said, when I created a FTP account I gave up on 2* champions after about half an hour.

how exactly would 2*s overwhelm new players? especially when you say you gave up on 2*s after 30min of playing lol

I've always wondered this myself, but here is the likely reason.

That is the only logical explanation, but as I mentioned in my post, nobody in their right mind is gonna spend money on 2*s lol
The existence of these crystals suggests otherwise 🤷‍♂️.

Because when I created my FTP account I wasn't a new player (6 years+, at the time) and understood exactly what I was doing, and what most of the champion kits do.

The one thing I realised was how daunting the game could be to a new player, and keeping that early-game experience manageable is critical for the survival of the game.

Things like the Collector Underworld Crystal are there for the collectors (clue is in the name) who want to round out their collection of champs at every possible star rating.
