It sounds like a load balancing issue. Some parts of the game’s systems are hosted in Google cloud, and Google is probably using load balancers to direct people to the “nearest” datacenters and using DNS resolution to do that. But if some parts of that system are not working correctly, certain players could get directed to parts of the system that are not working correctly while other players are working just fine. This is one of the reasons why I suggest players who have consistent inability to log into the game to try using a VPN to change their network path to the game.
If this is working for the OP, this suggests a similar thing going on. Using google’s DNS servers is essentially giving their device different IP addresses for the game systems than they were getting before from their ISP provider which is sending them to different systems to contact the game.
However, I suspect this isn’t like to fix everyone’s connectivity issues, because in some cases using a VPN (which I believe normally also alters your DNS to point to the VPN provider as well) doesn’t always fix the problem for players reporting persistent connectivity issues.
