You trade it for a champ, but you can’t have enough to get the champ unless you spend.

That's exactly why I think you'll also be able to trade each essense for something in the store if you can't afford the champ.

They said you’d need 12 essence for 7* Lumatrix specifically. They’ll probably offer the lower rarity versions in the store for a lower price.

They were Cavalier crystals. Sorry, would've responded sooner, but this hit a nerve and caused me to play considerably less since then. Not that Kabam cares. But I've learned to play casually and spend no money whatsoever now, so lesson learned I guess. No surprise to see no Kabam rep say anything about this.

So, yeah, it's either settle for a crappy reward or get light essence for no reason (assuming, like me, you aren't purchasing other light essences).
