There are things you can do here and there, but really best thing to do is just to play the game. For the most part, this game isn't about specifically targeting rewards. It is about making progress (doing content, leveling) and getting access to better and more rewards. Given where I'm guessing you are in the game, there's nothing you can farm where you are that will give you better results than just continuing to progress in the game and letting rewards ramp up on their own.
1) Try to find a semi retired alliance that has many strong players and they are willing to support 1-3 weak people to grow because then you will get quit strong AQ, SA other alliance event reward (they might not do much aw but if they do then they will run low tire 1-2 bg aw where you will get more shards without much effort)... Me and one of my friends started at same time he followed that strategy and I joined a alliance where most people are like me (beginners) after sometime he was 30% more stronger than me in terms of rosters (5&6*, r4-r5, rank up resources). i was more skilled than him but I was wasting my efforts in weak alliance
2) play arena as much as you can if you are f2p(at least for some time), because units will help you to beat harder content (more resources)
Change your alliance according to your rosters and skill for better rewards, semi retired alliance are best for beginning, make some mcoc friends so they will help to find better alliance

But on my mini account(which I just started) I've been doing Eq and Story Quest to gather some shards
