Here's a copy/paste of a previous post I made describing how death matches have always existed in the higher tier arenas and how to avoid them. Fair warning: it's long..
Assuming death matches stay the same as they have always been in the arena system. There's always been a work around. I've abstained from commenting on this for the most part for fear of disagree spam when all I'm trying to do is actually help. 🙂 I think with the new arena system many progressing players were exposed to them and it was new to them (a result of the new system) and they weren't used to dealing with/working around it. So, it caused unrest. Understandable so. But, even though it was new to them, death matches have been in the arena since the beginning. It's always just been a matter of learning the work around.
Though, your number of pvp fights indicates you're no stranger to the arena. If you're familiar with the old Featured arenas, more specifically the old 5* Featured. I'd guess the death match criteria is probably identical. I only say guess because my roster eventually got to a point where it didn't affect me (because I could just enter my top champs while "building my streak", then continue to use high level champs throughout my grind). This is not necessary though. It's just one of the perks to roster progression. For years throughout my progression, I did in fact have to mindfully adhere to the criteria needed to avoid them. The concept is unchanged. It only scales up a little as higher ranks of champs become available in the game. When r4 6 eventually happen, it will scale up again slightly.
Forgive me if you already know any of this, but I'm just gonna type it out in case you or anyone finds it helpful.
Series 1-10: any champ that makes sense for your situation (fights will scale in PI, but there will be no actual death matches, yet)
Series 11-15: This is first phase to be careful. Try to plan ahead and reserve your absolute top champs for these 5 series. The higher rank/rarity you enter, the more favorable of a match you will receive. Not only because your champs are stronger, but the game actually gives you easier matches as a direct result of entering high rank champs to begin with.
Series 16-20: You still need to be careful here, but the criteria isn't as stringent as 11-15. Your teams do not necessarily need to be max 5/r2 or above, but make sure they are no lower than 4/55 (5 star) or (1/25) 6. If you *can* use higher, do it, but 4/55 and 1/25 should work.
Series 21 and beyond: This begins the "infinite streak". From here, the requirements are less stringent, but they still exist. Your teams must have a minimum total PI. If you enter a team below this minium, you will receive a "death match". I believe the requirement is basically equivalent to maxed 4 star and 3/45 5 star. There may be lower combinations that still pass, but I will leave that to those who have more current knowledge on what the minimum "safe" team is currently. As I haven't really run any champs lower than that in some time.
Anyway, just posting this in case it helps anyone.
Edit: When my roster was more limited (a long time ago at this point), I actually had to wait for cool down of my top champs to make it through rounds 11-15. I know it sounds annoying, but that's what we did to get through it.
I'll never understand the big deal with "death matches". You don't have increased attack or health nodes. Almost all of them probably have suicides running. We regularly take harder fights in quests all the time but why does everyone freak out when it's in arena? WS in RoL has 500k health yet we take him down with 3*'s or less all the time.
They are time-consuming and sometimes AI doesn't play ball meaning a sp3 will insta KO you. Deathmatches also have high attack values relative to you and most people grind arena with their brains off, not focusing completely so when you get clipped, it can cost your streak sometimes. It's pretty superficial but it is what it is.

Can you tell me the minimum PI for series 1 to 10? Others I can manage. i think. And yes. I know about infinite streak as I played in previous version of arenas. But after a long gap, I am thinking of farming the arenas again for units. So ... Maybe I'm a bit rusty. I was able to reach infinite streak and I think I did about 100 wins in a row (not in a day but the whole duration of arena 😅). But these new arenas. I find it trouble to maintain the streak. The picture I posted in forum.. I was angry and tired as that was 6 star r3 champs. I wanted the easy fights.. but that... That's not easy!
@LordPSN after selecting your team and the arena match, you can move around your fighters to make the fights more favorable. For example, you could have moved SpiderGwen to fight Doom and masacre to fight Sunspot. Much easier that way.

I guess beyond what I posted above, I can give examples of what I use now. And also examples (at least I think, from memory) of what I used to use in the past with a lower roster.
Here's what I do now (this is with a roster of 4+ years of playing daily). Not a brag, at all. Just to show that things will get easier the more you play.
Series 1-5: 4/55 Series 6-10: 6 star 1/25 Series 11-15: My 6 star roster from the top down (all r3 and r2 champs) Series 16-20: continue same (all r2 at this point) Series 21 and beyond: rest of 6 star roster, then move to max 5 star, 4/55, 3/45... all depends how much time I have and what I'm trying to go for. If I'm just doing milestones, I honestly won't even go below maxed 5 star. This is why my knowledge of what's a safe team in the current system for series 21 and beyond is unclear. I need feedback from others who are using their whole 5 star roster to add to this. I will need to know myself if I go for a champ or something. Although it's probably as easy as watching a standard BG arena stream and note what team combinations he uses at 21+. I watch his streams all the time, but more just listening in the background rather than actually watching which teams to use.
Here's what I *used* to do in the past (which is probably closer to where you are):
Series 1-5: lower rank 4 star Series 6-10: low rank 5 star (these fights will advance in PI of opponents, but nowhere near what they will be in 11-15. Just pay attention to the fight and should be fine.) Series 11-15: I would save my highest and best for this. A mixture of 4/55 (or 1/25 6 star if I had them) and 5/65 5 star. I would do like (2) 4/55 and (1) 5/65. Adding in that 5/65 relaxes the difficulty of the matches. A full team of 5/65 of higher makes it a joke and just play while barely paying attention, but with 4/55 or 1/25 the fights are fine, but just need to focus more. It's all gonna depend on your number of 5/65 or 2/35 - 6. When I only had a few, I'd save them to mix into my teams for like series 13, 14 or 15.. etc. Til eventually I had 5 and used one per team on 11-15.. then added more from there.
Series 16-20: I *used* to use maxed 4 star and 3/45 5 star to get easy matches... Though I'm sure this is now 4/55 or 1/25 - 6 as there are now 6 r3 in the game.
And again, the current safe team PI for 21 and beyond I'm not exactly sure rn. But (after cooldown the first time if needed) I know that the strategy is to mix higher PI with lower PI 5 star. But I need help from others for the actual minimum safe team right now in the game.
