Champion Acquisition - Something's Gotta Give!

The problem I have with champion acquisition is that (like others have already pointed out) there is such a huge discrepancy between when the champion initially comes out with a lot of hype, and when I can realistically get my hands on them. You are never a part of that initial hype and can, instead, almost feel a sort of anti-hype eventually as you just never pull them. There are countless champs that I've seen be introduced, only for me to then see both their rise and their fall within the meta without me even getting my hands on them at a reasonable star-level. It feels like I'm watching at least parts of the game from the sidelines sometimes.

I think one thing Kabam could do is to make more events that require lower-level champs. Introduce side quests for 3 or 4*s, with progression-appropriate rewards. Given the current arena structure, those rarities are already easily obtainable. It's also really easy to rank them up. If you have quests where you can actually use them, you can bring non-whales onto the hype train and give them somewhere to take their new (low-star) champions for a spin. That way, people can grow to love them, which in turn leads them to want higher rarities of those champs to bring into regular content.

As it is now, sure, I can grind a bit for a 3 or 4* version, but I have no content to use them in so why really bother? If you introduce some challenges for those champs to partake in, you increase their desirability exponentially. You obviously can't take a 4* Kitty Pryde into Act 7 but if you can still use her to earn some extra TB-level rewards every once and again, then heck yeah I'm going to go after her in arena and rank her up.

If she serves no function for me, as a TB player, at that level...why should I go after her? What's the point?

Make that acquisition worthwhile, Kabam. Especially since you've already discontinued the selling of champions. What's the point of that if not to give us some content to use those champs in?

I do like this idea of expanding the viability of lower tiered champions (star rating, not some YouTubers tier list of how they think Champions are) but I think another issue would arise in the restriction in the amount of T4CC that is currently available. Taking a 4* Champion to Rank 5 costs a player 3 T4CC, and I feel like there aren't too many places you can acquire T4CC each month. The Monthly EQ I think can net you a total of 5 if you 100% explore Master, Uncollected, and Cavalier. You could spend 2000 Glory every week to get another 5 T4CC, but is 8000 Glory/month for 20 T4CC a worthwhile investment?

Much like the statement about watching champions rise and fall from the meta without ever using them, I guess it would be possible to just run the theoretical content with your existing 4*s at 5/50, but then we kind of run into the same problem of not being able to use the new champions because you don't have them ranked high enough.

I'm probably just being stingy with T4CC, but considering it takes like 15 of them to take a 6* from Rank 1 to Rank 3, I feel like they should be just a bit more plentiful within the game to allow players the chance to rank up lower tiered champions without sacrificing bigger rankups.

I'm on the other side of it. While I agree that ranking up 6*s drains your t4cc fast, I'm also in the boat of constantly having them in or near overflow. I tend to use 4* rank-ups as a means to keep them in check if I don't have any 6*s to rank up.

However, the solution to this problem would be to have 3* events instead of 4* events. While I don't have any problems ranking up 4*s at the moment, it would maybe become a problem if I had to constantly rank them up for content. With 3*s, there are no such problems. They don't compete with 6*s for any resources and can be ranked up completely independently. I also have (and I suspect this is the case for many) a much larger max-ranked 3* roster compared to any other star-level, and it would be nice to have a use for them. I don't even use them in arena after the changes there.

A lot of other games have a open x amount of boxes/summons/crystals to get your choice of character, granted a lot of those games don't have 4/5/6* versions of each champion so I don't know how it'd work, but something of the sort would be a good step. Even if it's just x amount of cavalier crystals guarantees a 6* like a 6* every 20 Cavs not including the 6*s you roll by luck.

Least that way you're not spending 175/200 units per crystal on 3* simulator 21.

As for 6* crystals and 5* crystals, they need to just add class specific ones, even if they're 12500 or something. Because even 5* duals have a 5* chance to give you the champ you want.

I remember when the daily deals used to be double the chance or a 5*, or 4* whichever it was way back then, and the super rare occasions of double drop rate crystals. Those times are long gone, and it's a damn shame.

Completely agree with OP here. Something has to change moving forward.

I’m for anything that makes specific champ acquisition a little easier at certain levels. The trick will be deciding who gets the easier modes of acquisition and how much easier.

But it is frustrating for veteran accounts who would like to play with a particular champ for enjoyment to be unable to acquire that champ even after a lot of expenditure.

Somewhere between 300K and 400K 5* shards burned for either 5* Prof X or Wolverine that yielded neither; currently on try #15 for 5* Shang and have plenty of Jabaris, Visions and Purgatory but no Shang.

As for the catalysts, why are 5* rankup gems not readily available for TBs? Put them in the daily as a semi-rare drop. Make them earnable via gameplay. So much cat overlap and like clockwork, as soon as I rank the 5* version the 6* finds its way into my drops.

What happens with mcoc is this cycle-

    1. Players join

    2. Players play, enjoy, spend occasionally

3a. Players get bored, they quit OR

3b.Players become hardcore, they spend a ton , then get bored and quit (move to retirement alliances)

    4. Go back to step 1.

While kabam does care about retaining players, they don't care if you leave because there's also new players joining who'll start spending on these ludicrous offers.

And tbh, once you've spent on this game they've got you hooked. You may decide not to do arena but you can't resist that offer to get a 6* champ or the cav crystals.

Every aspect of this game is business and nothing will change unless it creates more business. Giving away NEW champs at certain milestone as a regular feature isn't generating more business, it's illogical.

As long as MCU is ongoing, this game will go on. There's a clear and ever growing fan base. You'll get improvements, new features but they just changed arena and I don't see the changes you mentioned happening soon or for that matter, ever.

So it's been a couple of weeks now and I wanted to briefly revisit this topic.

Arena scores are rising. Cutoffs keep getting more and more ridiculous, and it's definitely driving people away. I know a few people who have quit arena altogether - or at least get the milestones and then stop (myself included).

What's the point in offering this aspect of gameplay if only the top dogs will ever benefit from it?

Beyond that, I'm really interested to know if anyone at Kabam has an opinion on this topic (not just the rising cutoffs I mentioned in this post but the topic of this thread in general). @Kabam Miike @Kabam Porthos @Kabam Zibiit @Kabam Boo would anyone like to weigh in?

The Arena is a competition. The whole point is whoever puts up the most Points gets the Champ.

I haven't ranked up a 5* to r5 in a long time now. All t5bs are reserved for 6* champs as t5b are so rare now.

I don't think that T5B is as rare as you make it out to be. It's not as plentiful as we'd like it to be, but that's not to say it's rare. AQ does offer a decent amount of T5B shards in the ranked rewards (assuming you place high enough) but even Top 90 gets 40% in the rank rewards per cycle. Add in another 900 shards each day for completing all 3 BGs maps and getting them 100%, and that's half a T5 per cycle. A month (4 cycles) to get 2 T5B from AQ alone isn't that bad.

Then there's 45k T5B Shards across the Cavalier difficulty of the Event Quest, 9k from Uncollected, and 18k from the Monthly Calendar - another 70k T5B Shards which amounts to 1.8 full catalysts.

So, we're looking at close to 4 catalysts a month - without looking at pulls from Map or Daily Crystals - assuming Thronebreaker and Top 90 AQ. Even at Top 800 in AQ, you're looking at 14000 + 4500 per cycle, or 1.8 Catalysts a month.

Top 200 AQ Thronebreakers who 100% Cavalier and Uncollected EQ can expect approximately 3.6 catalysts a month, without crystals.

Top 90 AQ Thronebreakers can expect approximately 3.8 catalysts a month, without crystals.

Top 20 AQ Thronebreakers can expect approximately 3.9 catalysts a month, without crystals.

3.6 Catalysts may not sound like much, but that's an r2 6*, or almost 2 new r5 5* champions per month. Depending on your needs, ranking a 5* isn't the worst thing.

The amount of money being insane also has to assume crystals aren’t including in all the bugs and function perfectly…! Lol

What about just releasing 1 champ per month for 6/8 months of the year and 2 on special occasions (Halloween, just before deals etc)? It would give them more time to get the champs right, get real buffs that r useful done and open up more arena spots as u could have double the arenas for that champ (or maybe 1 extra round then one more for the buffed champ). I mean who cares about purgatory and friends anyway? They r sometimes cool to play but if it’s one new champ it would have to b good right? I have finished spot 105 for kitty and herc and it hurts bad…. So bad. 😢😂 how many people r playing the game that making it top 150 would kill the game?

I’m really hoping that the solo mode comes out ASAP and makes a difference to this game because I think it can save it but they gotta make it worth while and adding new champs to that (as long as it’s available for all in some way so ftp can progress too) could make it fun again and keep it competitive.

3.6 t5b might be plentiful to you. It is rare for me.

I have exclusively ranked up 6* for months now and still have a t5cc in all classes ... just at this moment, I could (and want to) use 42 t5b right now ... I only see a 5* Hercules jumping that queue ... other than that, no chance.

To be fair I never said it was plentiful, just that it's potentially more than was expected. I actually only just did the math for that post, and it was nice to see what the numbers were.

I do think it would be nice if it was more available - I've got 2 t5 in every class except mutant and it would be great to be able to use them sooner rather than later, but I do think that some 5*s are worth the investment, since they haven't been restricted anywhere yet.

I have been playing for 5+ years, still don't have cgr, corvus, hype, warlock, ghost,ht,sor sup, moleman, aegon, to name a few , as anything above 4*. Recently got capiw doom as 5*. You complete all the quests just to get disappointed again and again. Champion acquisition is what will make me quit this game. Rng sucks.

I agree with you. It's super disappointing to put so much time into completing content to be rewarded with champions that aren't what you're looking for, or are just so outdated that it's basically a useless pull. There's nothing exciting about pulling a 6* Green Goblin, since he has no practical uses beyond just another body for the arena.
