With that said, super cool to see this level of responsiveness.

Let me add a perspective that I don't see often here on forums though:
I am an endgame Paragon player that plays in an alliance with maybe 6-10 Paragon and TB summoners, and like 20 Cav and below summoners because I value the connections I have made throughout the game and mentoring new summoners. I consistantly get less (and often far less) rewards in almost every alliance event because almost all players at my level are in an alliace that has a very small account size/progression deviation.
I saw this event and got excited because we don't have enough players to play high level AQ, and thus I haven't had an engaging AQ fight in like 5 years. It was much more fun to go through with specific lower level champs because I was finally getting decent rewards for my time, and having slightly more difficult fights. Maybe this makes it more difficult for players in alliances where champion choice matters greatly, but the pool of champions wasnt drastically restrictive, and the milestones for rewards weren't that hard to achieve. Every part of this game is about a tradeoff of effort for rewards. If you want to play more arena, then you probably have to miss out on some EQ/SQ/other rewards. Maybe, in this one instance, it isn't the worst thing that playing in a less competitive alliance allows for more flexibility in pursuing certain rewards (while those in extremely competitive alliances will get better rewards from those wars/quests anyways). If you think of it as a boost in rewards for those that have the freedom to pursue it, instead of a loss in rewards for those who are focused on better events/competition, then maybe that would help.
That being said, the move to prioritizing using said champions while still rewarding other play was definitely the way to go.
Before anyone says "it's so your alliance members don't carry you in the event and to prevent leeching off of their scores for rewards" let me remind you they already have the ability to put points minimums for different milestones like the gifting / banquet event has had for years.
These rewards are gained from the individuals input into AQ. I took 3 months off from the game, came back and created a solo Alliance. I earned 2,600 loyalty on my own. I’ve since joined an Alliance that’s been top 300 last 2 AQs and we get 5,000 loyalty. Less than double the loyalty but 30 peoples combined effort. I get there are rewards in AQ, but I guess my point is, if you’re not already in Alliance I don’t think these specific rewards will incentivise anyone to seek one out, they already know there missing out on rewards from AQ, AW, BG, Summoner Advancement etc. I could be wrong, you could have analytics that show bump in Alliance membership after this event. Now the whole 7* event that incentivises being in an Alliance. Sadly I was still in my solo bubble at the time so missed out.
