Generic T3 dust would mean everyone would focus on ascending their Onslaughts, SWs, and all the new champs. Kabam would lose a ton of money and it would defeat the purpose of ascension acting as a new rarity because new rarities don't give players much choice, as we can see below.

Kabam can tune things but their ascension design feels right.

The CURRENT Rank (16) that class is at does NOT have a special colored banner at top. It is the currently highest you you’ve achieved. In pictured case, Rank16 that gave you the +6% Attack.

Clicking lower (to left) gives your prior achieved rank, in GREEN BANNER saying Rank already Unlocked.

Clicking higher (to right) gives you a BROWN BANNER, saying LOCKED. THAT is the one you have NOT achieved yet, in that case being 17.
You did not show a picture of that (17).

Had you checked, that would have indicated that (17) is LOCKED (and just like your, opposite, corollary) you could have just as easily inferred that since 16 does NOT have a LOCKED banner on it, that one must be the one you are currently at.
