I actually think most of it came from free to play and small spenders. A lot of them chose to hold onto their units last year because sentiment for the banquet was low, and then decided to unload those units this year because sentiment was so high.

Consider that if players spent, say, $30 million USD more on the banquet this year, that would generate something like a billion more points. And that seems unlikely: that would be a massive improvement over last year.

That's not to say spenders didn't spend more: I think they did, maybe a lot more. But they still represent only a small percentage of the player population. Half a million people spending a thousand units will quickly overtake a thousand players spending an otherwise massive quarter million units each.

There's nothing to be noticed. You opened crystals when you were not eligible. You should've never got the points at the start of the banquet to begin with, the only reason you got them was because of a bug.
