You're missing the point. It's not about the gap in rewards so much as it's about having to rank champs you don't want to play just to stay competitive. If the player doesn't rank the prestige champs then they get worse rewards, simple

Kabam is a business. Most software development businesses (I’ve led software development teams for 20 years) talk to their customers, find out what they want, and then write code to meet that need. Kabam’s SOP seems to write code they think is cool, find out that the customers hate it, and then say “Come on, Relax Guy” (in my best Southpark H***r impression).
