I think unfair to call this unfair lol. Neither is it nessecary to sell your 1* champs, nor are you in any way enticed to do so.

If they don’t want ppl to sell their champs then don’t put the option to do so
They give you the choice to sell things or keep things, because the game rewards better choices, and because the game rewards patience over impatience. Nobody sold 1* champs without thinking they were getting something for it. Those people took the immediate benefit over the potential for a long term deficit. The people who didn't sell got the long term benefit of not selling something you didn't ever need to sell.

Furthermore, the people who don't have good options for V4 can choose to spend a lot of units to get those options now, or simply wait for better and cheaper options to come along. I'm pretty sure that bleed node isn't there for no reason, but it also isn't there just so the devs can immediately hand out a better choice the day Variant comes out either. You can spend resources on crystals to get 1* champs now. Or you can spend a ton of potions and boosts to try to power your way past those fights with suboptimal 1* champs. Or you can simply have patience and wait for better options to come along, which they always do.

Rewarding patience and taxing impatience is why we even have a game to play at all. The game doesn't sell things: there are no things to sell and nothing any of us can walk away with owning. The game can only sell time, and it sells less of it to the patient and more of it to the impatient, and the impatient keep the lights on for the patient. Patience is just as much of a skill in these kinds of games as Parrying is.
