Back issue variant rewards

I’m curious if Kabam has commented on, or what the community’s thoughts are, on giving the rank 3-4 crystals that are only usable for 2015/2016 champs only in the variants.

I think the idea made sense originally but as players go through more and more variants, the pool of champs to use the rank up gems on gets smaller, and the ones worth using it on is even smaller still. I know the 2-3 and 4-5 are not limited but the 3-4 would still be nice to have moving into 2017-2020 champs.

Is the intent that the next wave of variants might be 2017 (with rank up gems for 2017), then 2018 etc.? Or do they all correspond to 2015/2016 content?

    They correspond to when that particular event quest was first released.

    I suggested this somewhat recently. The game’s meta, especially with the glory store, means that an old 5/65 champ is hardly going to damage the meta or create a shortcut to other rewards. I think a 4-5 2016 gem is a great accompaniment to current exploration rewards. No one out there is taking Hawkeye or Luke Cage to 5/65 but it’d be fun to have the chance.

    I burned 3000 units on vision because I didn’t have Star Lord and my 2015 Tech gem was worthless otherwise (Ultron was my first 4/55). So what happened when I did variant 4? I got two more tech gems. That Hulkbuster buff better be good.

    Right so won’t it be a while before we start seeing 2017+ back issues? There are a number of 2015/16 ones left to go

    Good idea. I'd love to see and have Starlord at rank 5 now that he's a non-factor when it comes to my prestige tbh. Captain Marvel classic too.
