How do you guys feel about younger versions of established characters? (eg Overseer and Maestro)

Hey community,

As the title says, how do you feel about characters like Overseer, New Kang, Purgatory ect? I personally don't see the point of giving us a "younger version" of an established character. Take Overseer for example. I understand he's supposed to be the younger version of Maestro before he became corrupt but if you ask the community, I'm pretty sure they would prefer to have a playable version of Maestro that differs from the one in Act 4. With that being said, it's not a big deal, I was just curious of where our community stood on this issue.

Without giving away too much, I've heard rumors of a new champ arriving to the Battlerealm this upcoming month but apparently, it's going to be a younger version of the powerhouse we know today. For those of you who know who I'm talking about, wouldn't it be better to just make it into the champ we know today?

Thats they only way to make galactus playable. You want a boot in game? you cant really fit galactus on the screen.

Galactus can alter his size. You don't need to make him massive in-game. Just look at Sentinels, it's the same idea.
The conceit of the game is that all of the champions are so jacked up on iso-8 that their normal power imbalances (like having Daredevil go toe to toe with Apocalypse or any of the Hulks). Galactus terrifies them all anyway, which means that his power goes substantially beyond that which the iso-8 can grant. Therefore, to make a playable version it has to be something less powerful than that. And the easiest way of explaining why a character is less powerful than we’re used to seeing is to make them younger.

I don’t think there needs to be a point. As long as the character is well designed both in appearance and abilities, I don’t care.
You’ll find that many players are not versed in the whole of Marvel. Some came to the game via the MCU or they simply read Spider-Man or the X-Men at some point.
Personally I think the Overseer is a cracking champ and the Kang fight is one of my favourites. So no complaints at all.

I hear you. If the character has a solid kit and great animations, I can overlook these issues. It just feels a little redundant to have a younger version of a character that has the same abilities as it's future counterpart. Aesthetics aside, wouldn't it be to just easier to bring in the original character as we know them? It's like bringing in a younger version of Beast (before his fur transformation) but never introducing the fan favorite version that is most common in the comics (his blue fur version).

I don't care if a champion is a younger version of another champion, specifically. I care if alternative versions of existing champions are good enough to warrant their inclusion, especially since a lot of older classic champions need to be buffed. I'm always a little bit bummed when we see a new Hulk or Spidey or Iron Man, because it feels like some of those ideas could have been used for buffs of the OG champs - and then we could have gotten some other cool champion instead.

That said, I think most alternate versions of existing characters have been fairly successful recently. Immortal Hulk, Overseer, Silver Centurion, Spidey 2099 and Captain Falcon have all brought something worthwhile to the game. I don't view Overseer in any particular light compared to the others simply because he's a younger version of his OG self. He's just a variant, in my eyes.

Well said. I share the same viewpoint when it comes to variations of the same character (case in point: Superior Ironman and OG Ironman)

As long as it adds something unique to the game then I'm all for it and I think it's cool. We still have a lot of old champions that needs to be given a second look, though. Ms. Marvel and Captain Marvel (OG), Superior Iron-Man, Iron Patriot, and Iron-Man (OG), Spider-Man (OG) and Symbiote Spider-Man, etc.

What established in game character is Purgatory a younger version of? The inclusion of her name in the originating post piqued my curiosity.

Purgatory is an alternate version of morningstar

Morningstar I guess is what OP is referring to. Purgatory is an alternate version of MS where she managed to get Guilly’s sword.

I’m not 100% sure about the younger part, I believe MS spent hundreds or thousands of years locked in the torture device. But if purgatory managed to get the sword earlier in her alternate history then she’d be counted as younger.

...and yet she's a big dud. At least, Morningstar is a good champ for long content. I'm really disappointed after learning how useless Purgatory is considering how cool her model is and her animation is so slick.

As long as the champ is good and helps me clear content, the version of the champ doesn't bother me. Overseer is a good champ, so I don't really care whether we get Maestro or a younger and less douchier version of him.

while i agree that lots of shape manipulation can occur, you cannot make galactus a dud. Galan though, can be a dud.

I'd be down for a new Punisher with Baby Thanos in a harness 🤔

I'd settle for just getting a 6 star Punisher
