Randomness: I didn’t understand OG Spidey’s buff. My bad, Kabam. It’s awesome

Hey, folks! Hope all is well!

I always think transparency is good. I tend to post most often about kits and buffs, and I am usually pretty vocal when I think Kabam has done well with original kits and buffs/reworks I think are pretty good.

(For example: I gently tried to explain to folks that Red Skull’s buff was fire! I did! I really did!)

But I also make very clear that I absolutely realize that I don’t know everything about this game. I do ask questions. Stuff flies by me all the time and it can be frustrating when it’s right there.

That brings us to today’s topic: OG Spider-Man’s buff from about a year ago.

That was one of those buffs that I just “didn’t get.” I didn’t understand it.

That’s not to criticize Kabam — it was me. Totally my fault. I didn’t concentrate enough on the updated descriptions and I wasn’t patient enough to keep working at it, testing it.

Recently, though, I swallowed my pride and went online, searched YouTube for information about the buff, found two that I watched — but there were absolutely more — because it’s important to note that people are making and posting content to help players get better at this game. I appreciate it and encourage others to seek assistance with this game if you have questions! No one knows everything.

With that said: I want to be clear.

1. The OG Spider-Man buff isn’t a Red Magneto-level buff.
2. However, it’s a very good overall buff that actually did a bit more than I thought it could.
3. It absolutely helps to have the kit awakened AND at high sig. You can do stuff more…easily?
4. It’s not the fastest in raw DPS, but there are moments — I had a 68K crit with a 5/55 kit, L2.

It’s a Science kit with a ton of debuffs, so yes, you absolutely can reverse healing. I would prefer Slow to Decelerate, but that isn’t a dealbreaker — you still get nearly-flawless control against Unstoppable procs.

Some people already knew this buff was good, and that’s awesome.

But I remember when it was released, it was pretty quiet on the boards. So I wanted to revisit, own up to my lack of understanding, and encourage anyone who has an OG Spider-Man sitting there that they haven’t really mastered, post-buff — especially if it’s at a naturally high sig — to maybe take that kit for a spin, because it really is kinda good. Sorry I didn’t get it before!

Thanks for listening!

If you want to talk about a "I don't get it buff", speak about Civil Warrior. He was given basically *nothing* of any valuable substance. Seems the design team didn't know what to do with him, even to begin with.

Hmmm…perhaps…I will? Maybe? Because I actually understood that one pretty well. It’s actually not THAT bad, but they messed up the timing on the Armor Up/Fury switching by making it too tight AND not linking it to high sig level giving you more time, so people just aren’t ever gonna use it

It’s too bad, because it’s actually close being interesting/good

Agreed, the Civil Warrior buff isn’t *bad*, but it is extremely stressful. Having to dash back and hold block that often isn’t fun. Additionally, you kinda want to have a few armor ups to get his bleed/poison counter going, so it’s a bummer that you have to choose between any damage or any utility.

Yep — Wicket just summed it up.

Yeah the sacrifices you have to make in order to play him *optimally* are way too much for what you get

He's honestly pretty underrated. The taunts make the defender throw specials like crazy, he can counter unstoppable and evade, he has an evade which makes up for his small health and block, has decent damage, etc. He may not be the fastest champ or the best Spiderverse champ (that goes to Silk), but he is better than most people think.

Agreed. When I pulled him as a 6 star, I was kinda underwhelmed as well. Personally I would get rid of the fury buffs, and make it so that each armor up grants +X attack rating. This would make him better as he would have access to both his damage as well as utility and tankiness. Thoughts?

It’s usually SP1 twice to get your full webbing debuffs up, then SP2 for big damage from all the taunts; in a long fight you’ll mix in more SP1s to keep the webbing up in between SP2s.

Agreed. You can have a lot of fun with him; and if you use Science Power boosts, you can do some insane damage during that SP2 window.

I think the control that he gives you is what's underrated: probably the best Taunt in the game.

He is unusable as a attacker in battleground tho, he just heals the opponent. Spiderman becomes a medic basically.

I actually began to appreciate him after initial criticism as well. What bothers me tho, is the reliance on awakening. I pulled a 7* Spidey, tested him and found him a lot of fun, but the sig ability just does too much. The champ is worthless without it, unless you go EQ with debuff counts. But of what use is shutting down guaranteed Unstop/Evade w 50% chance?

I admit tho, that this isn't a bad thing on Spidey himself, but rather in general. I understand Sigs are important part of the game, but I have always hated to pull a champ, only to know I will actually be able to play them only once I do that again
