You can complete solo crystal objectives and use them to open the solo crystals which cost 1k of those shards.
These are daily objectives which gives 50 crystals (32 solo + 8 gold). This will get you going to easily reach 1000 crystals with 50+ per day average.
I got 111 on day 1 with just usual item crystals.

I am not bragging but there is no way i am opening 1k shard solo crystals with an event or not...

But yes, well that is another pic, the thousands of T4 Cat and Fragment crystals they hand out nowadays that I also opened, lol.
And Gold from cashing in Arena Boosts (assuming you can sell those), etc. basically all the useless stuff we never used to be opening.
Just cashed in the 100-some XP Boosts I got also.
This 10 at a time is bugging me.
Someone like @DNA3000 would be able to give a more fuller answer.
Another trick is Sunday Arenas Crystals, that gives a lot of them.

Short answer: the trend says we will fall short - probably around 650-700 million. However, if there is a large burst of crystal openings at the end, the final milestone is still theoretically reachable. A similar thing happened with Road to the Crypt.
However, even if we don't make it, we should still try to reach as many milestones as we can. We're not always going to max out the milestones in every Realm event. But that doesn't mean we shouldn't, as a playerbase, still try to do our best.
There are some players out there saying the event is trash, that it "forces" us to waste crystals, etc. They are entitled to their opinion. I don't ask anyone to do what they are unwilling to do, and if they see their efforts as a waste of their time or a waste of their resources, then they should act accordingly. However, I believe the Realm events are there for those of us who are attracted to the idea of cooperative events. Alliance war is for the players who want to do war. Battlegrounds is there for the players who want to do Battleground matches. A lot of people hate war, a lot of people refuse to queue up for Battlegrounds. That's fine.
In this and every other realm event to follow, your efforts do not produce rewards for yourself. They collectively produce rewards for everyone. If that means something to you, open crystals. Open the ones you feel are appropriate. The rewards we get - and more specifically the rewards we produce for everyone else - will be based on how much we collectively want to help our fellow players.
Another 150 units is within reach. A bunch of T2 dust is within reach. A Mythic crystal and some 6* shards are in reach. Those would be useful rewards for hundreds of thousands of players. Some players look at those shards and see rubbish. I see the potential for half a billion 6* shards to be handed out to players, so I continue to open crystals.
I mean, it's just opening some of those crystals that don't need to be hoarded. We open some anyway, so just need to open some more and get some free stuff. Criticize the AI and other issues, but the rewards are fine for the time and effort of just opening crystals.
