Thanks - this is me showing my newness to the game again, but I’ve joined a new alliance, and want to place some defenders for next war. There’s only 6/10 people on the map so there’s space, and the alliance isn’t enlisted in this war, but I can still only spectate. I can’t join. In some alliances do you have to be invited to join the war? The join button is greyed out for me at the moment.
Not sure why it won't let you place defenders, but you can't join a war that is already in progress at the time you join an alliance. You should still be able to place defenders though because that doesn't take effect until the next war.

Then it may be related to your war with your previous alliance. If you didn't finish that war (reach the final node) then your defenders are probably locked until it ends.
Is the royal hunt the last chance to get banquet tickets? I’m not on 6.4 so don’t have this available to me. I think even when I can purchase the next 5 tickets in the outpost I’m only going to have 20. Will I be able to get another 10 from anywhere to get me to at least 30? I would really like to be able to get sinister

There will be 10 from an accolades event in addition to 5 in the outpost, but otherwise yes.

If it's what I think it is, it's gifting titles and profile pictures. Nothing exciting, but a fun way to recognize friends and alliance members.
They are currently giving away a few champs for free if you sign up here https://playcontestofchampions.com/giveaway. Maybe that could help with your progress, and if you reach a higher tier before opening the reward you can even get them as a 6 star.

Try to be smart with who you rank up as well. Champs with utility and immunity will assist you alot.
