I honestly don't see very many people (outside of Kabam or those participating) really caring about this at all.
I'm sure it's exciting for the participants though.
While it may not be for everyone, a lot of people all around the world tuned in to see the semi-finals and finals of the NYCC Tournament last year.
Although you may not be tuning in, others might, and might really enjoy the idea of watching other parts of their Community compete in the first Tournament for a game that they enjoy!
So maybe I'm being a bit harsh, but I kinda wish the commentators had more than a passing knowledge of the game. When they kept saying that the player using X-23 would be using her special three, and at no time did anyone say that was kind of the worst possible thing to do short of letting go of the device (until the end when it didn't matter), it got painful to watch.
Using any specials when the objective is to end the fight with as much health as possible is quite literally the silliest thing to be telling a player to do in that situation.
I had to take a call after this, so I don't know if there was any commentary after the fight addressing this. But this just seemed goofy to me.
BIG ANNOUNCEMENT that over 99% of the regular player base can not participate in. Good work to Kabam for finding something even more pathetic than a broken Act boss.

People feel how they feel. Do I have a problem with it? Not on a personal level. It's just comical how people hear surprise and immediately go to getting something. Not all surprises involve Rewards. Some just have to do with something enjoyable and new. Generally, not everyone is excited about these, but many are. People get caught up in the competition of it. They root for their favorites, they talk about it after. It's hype. Doesn't always have to mean we're getting something. News is news.

I'd be willing to bet my game access rights against anyone elses that the vast overwhelming majority of players of the game don't have a problem with this.
It is a joint marketing event with Marvel at their SDCC booth. It is something worth marketing to the vast majority of players that aren't supremely jaded. Anyone who thinks the only big or important marketing announcements either involve them getting rewards or them getting to participate in something aren't really worth trying to please with marketing announcements.
Besides just being a fun event that involves the community, if not literally every single member of it, the event gives me an idea of how Marvel views MCOC as a product in their licensed gaming portfolio, and indirectly gives me an idea of how successful a product Marvel thinks MCOC is. Not only continuing events like this, but scaling them up says something to me that is interesting, so I think the announcement and the event itself is noteworthy even if I'm not actually going to be participating in the actual competition. I think it is good for the game I play that MCOC is continuing to get this kind of exposure and attention from the company holding the strings to it all.

Kabam shouldn't be surprised that the response to this is less than enthusiastic. They never showed why we should care about this. Maybe if the winner got to spin out a crystal of their choosing and everyone gets what comes out. I'm interested in that action. I think most of those youtubers viewers won't want to watch content they'll never ever get to play through as opposed to a new champ review or tutorial. The only scenario where I picture myself watching would be if this uses a new practice realm or something.

It seems pretty obvious a non-zero number of people have a problem or issue with this. I'm only stating that number is very small.
It is of course also going to be disappointing to a very small number of players, but I doubt that number is significant either. If players thought like that in general, no game would organize events like this. No game would do any community coordination and reach out with members of the community if most players were uninterested in anything that didn't directly involve them. For that matter, there wouldn't be any visible members of the player community in the first place, because no one would give them a second glance.
Honestly what I want to see is something that will include all summoners and offer your every day normal person a chance to prove their skill in the game. I don’t ultimately care about any of the big YouTubers playing in some tournament. I’d rather see what normal summoners who aren’t able to record videos or go to big comic-con venues can do.

Folks, this is nothing more than marketing. What Kabam apparently doesn’t realize is that people only check in with content creators because those people spend and can give advise on how to clear content BECAUSE THEY SPEND.
